A site where any individual can receive donations and send grants like Scott’s ACX Grants.
During the Manifund Q&A at Manifest, Austin mentioned a possible future for Manifund where they could help Eliezer Yudkowsky run his own grant round and anyone else who wants to.
I think this is a really good idea:
- Demand already demonstrated from Scott, Dwarkesh
- Solves lots of pain: The software product would dramatically decrease the effort required to receive donations, accept proposals, send grants, and track ongoing projects
- Great match for the skills Manifund has, since they’ve already built software to run rounds, and are well-connected to people who want to use it
- Solves the fundraising problem by delegating it to the regrantor
- Takes advantage of strong personal brands and expertise, giving people confidence to donate
- Could be implemented as an annual subscription(!)
- Can be run as a scaleable for-profit by charging 5% on all donations
This is a super EA project! Could plausibly:
- Increase total philanthropy
- Drastically increase the number of ambitious, creative, and risky projects
- Serve as a new funding model for science
- Bring greater transparency to philanthropy, since all grants would be public
You could aim to have the next ACX Grants contest be run on this software!
