TLDR: Starting January 1st, 2024 Manifold user donations will be capped at $10,000 per month.
In two words: simpler accounting.
One of the biggest challenges for any business is being able to anticipate and plan for future expenses. Although Manifold specifically declaims any legal obligation to continue mana redemptions to charity, we have a profound informal obligation to our users to ensure that any mana earned with an intent to donate actually gets donated.
This obligation ties the hands of the company in ways which make it difficult for us to plan for the future, understand our revenue, interface with investors, and explain to users what the long-term value of mana is.
Therefore, to ensure that Manifold can continue to operate the charity program in a long-term sustainable fashion, we’re instituting a monthly donation cap of $10,000 starting January 1st, 2024. What this means is that users will continue to be able to donate mana at the same 100 : 1 rate as before, except that donations will be halted for the month if they exceed $10,000.
So far, the median monthly donation is well below $5,000—let alone $10,000—so we don’t expect the impact to be very large in practice.
As Manifold continues to grow, we hope to be able to raise the donation cap to an even higher level in the future!
The donation cap does not take effect until next year. Please feel free to donate as much mana as you like until then!
In addition, we’re planning to host a couple donation drives around both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
