Groups should be a social layer on top of markets instead of a much crappier Discord-replacement
- We should do more to emphasize markets as the primary content
- Make questions the first tab in the Groups view, or
- Move chat to a sidebar
- Would become a tab on mobile
- Allow embedding markets
- What is the use case of Chat?
- [i] Has been really enjoying it in Colorado, Food Sins
- [G] Mexifold: useful to have markets updating based on things that were happening in the room. Helped Gavriel find a market really quickly
- Searching from a group is much easier
- [S] New user experience: When you show up, you want to see the questions, not the chat
- Normal apps don’t dump you right in the middle
- [Gavriel] But not things that are “only” for chatting
- If you see a bubble on the bottom right, something you can click on and chat, minimize
- [i] Just don’t bet on markets as much as Ian chats, so want chats
- [Quinn] Twitch and Reddit have a heirarchy
- Creator, mods, etc - might be able to allow more structure if you’re willing to nominate mods
- Group creator decides if there’s chat or not
- Lesswrong: Commenting norms. You can adjust commenting norms per-post
- Leeway to suggest the kind of chat you’d want to see on your posts, could be extended to Manifold questions?
- [J] +1 for this option
- Some groups where chat doesn’t make sense; other groups where chat is primary focus
- [i] If it’s a beta feature, people might end up not using it
-
[mqp] Groups vision from Austin was to have low-friction for new Manifold users to engage in some kind of community behavior; easier than joining Discord
- Different than “commenting on markets”
- Would want to hear what kind of behavior new users would really want to do, that we could enable in a low-friction way
- Help-desk style “how Manifold works”
- Getting a sense of “Manifold is alive”
- Sending a direct message to ask about a specific market
-
[i] Food Sins - random user created an interesting type of market
- Wanted to create more markets like this; joined his group, started chatting about what the group is for, how do markets work
-
[Q] Want Manifold homepage to be made up of markets in groups I’ve opted into. Avoid all silly markets
- eg just remove group from curated homepage
-
[A, Q, G] wasn’t clear that For You could exist
- [A] Could make “For You” and other filters ⇒ bubbles on the top to show what’s possible
- [J] I like this. Maybe I will do this.
-
“About”:
- Should be renamed to or split into another tab for “Members”
- Do more to get users to add their friends
- “Share” ⇒ “Invite”
- Make more visually prominent
- Potentially field to put in friends’ emails
-
Current sidebar feels cluttered
- I would remove it entirely
- Move “add questions” button to main panel
-
Groups side bar looks good
- We should cache values so it loads instantly when you reload the page
-
Groups main page
- “Leave” button too visually prominent — should also appear within groups page
- Greater density might be good
- Can’t see that many groups from the main page
